    A mass is connected to a spring and it vibrates up and down, forming a simple harmonic system.
    Which of the following are correct?

    1. The kinetic energy of the mass is at a maximum half way up.
    2. The potential energy of the system is at a maximum at the top of the mass’s motion.
    3. The potential energy of the system is at a maximum at the bottom of the mass’s motion.

    A. 1, 2 and 3

    B. 1 and 2 only

    C. 2 only

    D. 3 only

    E. 1 only

    Answer= A

    In simple words, Simple harmonic motion(SHM) is back and forth movement through an equilibrium or central position so that maximum displacement of one side is equal to other side.

    For this question, you should know the properties of SHM.

    Consider pendulum as a mass connected to string.

    For 1, When motion starts, potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. So, when pendulum is at half way up (mean position), it’s kinetic energy will be maximum. Therefore, 1 is correct.

    For 2, When pendulum reaches at top position, kinetic energy is converted into potential energy. So, potential energy is at maximum at top position. Therefore, 2 is correct.

    For 3, When pendulum reaches at bottom position, kinetic energy is converted into potential energy. So, potential energy is at maximum at bottom position. Therefore, 3 is correct.

    This means that all three are correct.
